EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT, a KEY PRIORITY

EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT, a KEY PRIORITY

IN 2013, EMPLOYERS NEED TO LAY MORE EMPHASIS ON EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT THAN EVER BEFORE, SAYS PALAK BHATIA

The New Year inevitably brings with it a new action plan - an array of goals, visions and the modus operandi to achieve these. Employee development is one of the highlyprioritised aims for organisations in the coming year. Employees make up for the most vital assets of an organisation and their satisfaction as well as engagement are essential for high productivity. Employee development programmes inculcate a wholesome growth, both in a professional’s career and personality. Let us explore how companies are planning the same in 2013.

Kamal Karanth, MD, Kelly Services India, tells us how employee development is different from mere employee training, “Although employee training and employee development are similar in the methods used to foster learning, their timeframes differ. Training is more present-day oriented; its focus is on individuals’ current jobs, thus enhancing those specific skills and abilities to immediately perform their jobs. Employee development, on the other hand, generally focuses on future jobs in the organisation. As your job and career progress, new skills and abilities will be required. As you are groomed for positions of greater responsibility, employee development efforts can help prepare you for that day.”
Recent years have witnessed a spike in the impor
tance bestowed on employee development. Rajesh Rai, director- HR, Expedia India, tells us why 2013 is such a year, “Business challenges have been growing multifold and today, the office environment offers a myriad set of unique and complex challenges due to the fluctuation in the economy. Also, there is more emphasis on adding business value to get the requisite return on investments. To prepare employees for these challenges, proactive development is the key and hence, its increased importance today is gaining a lot of prominence.”
    What should
be kept in mind while planning employee development in the coming year? Meenal Sinha, country head - India, Imperial Servcorp says, “It cannot only mean sending employees for workshops and seminars – it’s not a responsibility that can be simply ‘outsourced’. Grooming people for enhanced responsibilities and the next-level has to become a culture-inherent process. A senior manager’s KRA must include team training and development, not only in structured environments, but also on an ongoing day-to-day basis. This needs to be coupled with the freedom to explore new areas and some latitude to make decisions, with the assurance that ‘learning mistakes’ are tolerated. The feeling that my organisation wants me to grow and that my seniors are willing to backstop for me as I learn are two of the sharpest development tools that we can find. We need to work within a framework of cross-functional and cross-location exposure that allows everyone to understand how the cogs in the wheel connect and how they plug into the whole and keep the machine running.”
Kamal Meattle, CEO, Paharpur Business Centre & Software Technology Incubator Park, tells us how employee development can work wonders in employee engagement and retention, “Encouraging employees to acquire new or advanced skills and knowledge by providing them with training facilities and avenues where such new ideas can be applied can be very beneficial for engagement.
Training programmes allow employees to interact with one another, discuss ideas and learn more about a given topic, which encourages active participation on-the-job outside of the training environment as well. Their increased productivity leads to financial gains and better retention.” Thus, employee development is a huge area of focus for 2013 in organisations and must be emphasised upon for better employee productivity.

WILL JOB
GENERATION
RISE IN 2013?

managing partner, Antal International Network:

“Yes, net job generation in 2013 would surely rise. Healthcare and life sciences have committed to an increase in headcount in 2013. FMCG is investing in new projects and targeting growth in business and headcounts. IT at the moment seems to be unsure of increased hiring; however, the sector will need to keep pace with last year.”
UMAIR MUHAJIR,
vice president and global head - Litigation Solutions, Pangea3:

“The answer will vary from industry to industry. Specialised areas such as Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) have been seeing demand in source countries’surge over the last few years, and the structural factors driving this growth are expected to continue pace in 2013.However,industries that are dependent on the domestic Indian market might see some slackening in job generation.”
MARIA NIRMALA,
head - India content and research, SHRM India:

“The job generation in 2013 will definitely rise not only due to entrants in the formal workforce, but also because of an increase in flexibility and entrepreneurial opportunities.”

O-zone One thing at a time

O-zone

One thing at a time

Studies show that multitasking is overrated. Instead, you can be highly effective by learning how to focus on being a serial tasker

HOW can anyone focus on any one thing in today’s world? It seems near impossible, and yet people must be doing so, or there would be no success stories anymore! A lot has been said in praise of multitasking, but the truth is that the world’s most successful people have never been multitaskers; they are people who have concentrated on their work and goals with intense passion and deadly focus. Do you
think Sachin Tendulkar could have made his centuries if he had not had single-minded focus? Could successful industrialists make their billions if they had been busy multitasking? Would great authors manage their magnum opuses doing several things at a time?
The mantra of successful people has always been ‘focus’. One thing at a time, as our elders taught us. And now science backs this intuitive wisdom. Neuroscientists have found that the human brain isn’t equipped to efficiently perform more than one task at a time. Says Dr Rene Marois, associate professor at Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, US, “People always address problems one at a time, though they may do it so fast, it feels like multitasking! What we are actually doing while multitasking is forcing the brain to switch from one task to another, which naturally results in loss of focus, time and energy.” Comparative brain scan studies show that multitasking slows down our reaction time, resulting in more accidents, less efficiency and socially-unfriendly behaviour.
The human brain is biologically wired to pay attention to new stimuli — be it an unopened email, a new tweet, a response on Facebook, a phone call, or even a car passing by as we sit working in front of the window. It comes naturally to us to lose focus on the activity at hand and be distracted by anything new. Experts say that when we multitask, we are actually just giving ourselves “a fix”, because any new stimulation releases the feel-good neurochemical dopamine, which gives us a natural addictive kick. And so, in the middle of writing an article, I will be tempted to check the new mail that dropped into my mailbox, or go back to the article I left open on another window, or be distracted by the new book that sits waiting on my table. While cooking, I will talk on the phone or answer an SMS.
In order to be effective, we need to fight, rather than feed this proclivity to be seduced by the new. One by one, is the real mantra. Be a se
rial tasker, rather than a multitasker. Like with anything useful, developing focus too needs commitment and practice.

• Prioritise tasks

• Build focus by setting aside exclusive time to deal with challenging tasks

• In that space of time, turn off the TV, log out of your email, shut down multiple windows on your computer and switch off your phone. Let people know you are busy and do not want to be disturbed.

• Try and understand your most and least productive periods. Some work best early morning, while others work better later in the day or late at night. Slot important tasks for your natural peak period.

• Do not allow your mind to wander; rein it in consciously and strictly to focus on the task at hand.

• Meditation is a great tool in building focus. Keeping the body still too helps.

• Do not stress your brain by carrying too many mental notes; put them down on paper or store them digitally. Check them once in a while.

• Take breaks when your mind begins to wander; keep your mind challenged with new interests and hobbies in your spare time.

• Your less productive time period should be used to check and answer emails and to engage in social networking.

• You need not read and respond to every SMS immediately. Effective people set time aside once a day for this task.

NASA astronaut takes students on a space ride

NASA astronaut takes students on a space ride

Ever dreamt of having a space centre in school or getting first-hand information from an astronaut working with NASA? Well this was made possible for students at Mulund’s NES International School.
Students from nearly 12 city schools got to meet Capt Jon McBride, an astronaut who came to the school to design and demonstrate a ‘4 Dimension Space Exploration Programme’. The two-day event, organized by the Mulund school, was a unique initiative to bring students up close with celestial bodies and quench their curiosity to know more about space.

The event commenced with the inauguration of a space exploration centre created in the school followed by a workshop ‘Earth to Space’. McBride
began his interaction by emphasizing the importance of education. “Chase your dreams but before that make sure you complete your education,” he said. Students quizzed McBride on space, the discoveries so far and various career prospects in this field. Questions shot at the astronaut ranged from whether there were aliens in space to which is the fastest space shuttle.
Narrating about his maiden expedition and tips to survive in space, McBride said, “Looking at
Earth from space is the greatest feeling one can ever get.” A model rocket launching exercise was also held while some students participated in a space colony designing contest.
“This programme will not only help explore the concept of space and the universe but also
give students an opportunity to advance their careers in space sciences,” said Dr R Varadarjan, founder principal of the school and president of NES-SVB group of institutions. Other guests present were Dr Jaydeep Mukherjee, director of NASA Florida space grant, and Sreela M, another NASA official. Giving students insights about the career prospects in space engineering and astronomy, Mukherjee said, “It is a myth that only students good at physics can be employed at NASA.” There are various options to pursue a career in space science and it is a lucrative one that will be in the limelight for at least another 50 years, he added.

LISTENING TO LEARNERS

LISTENING TO LEARNERS

Following the active participation of 30 students in the summit last year, this year, new learners from across the world were part of the WISE delegation to add fresh vigour to the event

The future of education maybe in the hands of young learners across the world, but how many of them get to decide about policies and resolutions, which shape their future? Are they ever asked for an opinion on environmental issues, the future of the education system or, for that matter, their views on health reforms? It is not unless we listen to learners and collaborate with them that we can create changemakers in education.
Following the active participation of 30 students in the
summit last year, this year, new learners from across the world were part of the WISE delegation to add fresh vigour to the event. Students from Palestine, Egypt, Afghanistan, Canada, Bahrain, Cameroon, Qatar, Syria, Pakistan, Netherlands, US, Tunisia, Haiti, Colombia, Jordan, Poland, Kenya and France, among others, participated as panelists, leading workshops, preparing sessions and conducting interviews with attendees.
According to Marcos Metry, an UG student at Texas A&M University, learners’ voice
brings forth views of students on the issue of thinking education. The programme builds their advocacy skills to ensure that leaders and decision-makers hear their voice and support their growth as change-makers in education.
For Firyal Al-Balushi, a fresh graduate from Oman Medical College, the basis of learners’ voice is that learning is best effective when it is a collaborative venture between teachers and students. She said, “In fact, learners should be co-creators of their learning environments.”
Ragda Awad, an UG student from Berzeit University, Palestine, who applied for this year’s summit, attributes her interest in the summit to previous years’ WISE learners and their inspiring work. She pointed out, “The 2011 WISE learners, after the summit, were involved in an intensive year of travelling, thus learning about innovations in education across the world. It was a great exposure and I was eager for a similar experience, which is why I applied for WISE 2012.”
With last year’s learners sharing their views and obser
vations about innovative approaches and their potential to improve access to quality learning for all, Awad is looking forward to share her experiences of this year with future WISE applicants.
Also, WISE learners this year provided new research ideas, interviewed attendees of the conference and contributed to blogs, among others. While meeting new people from various backgrounds and getting to work with them under one goal and meeting top ranking people from the education field from across the world, it was an enriching experience for this year’s WISE learners.
They will now be busy with their research work — quality and relevance in education — for a year.
As one of the learners confirmed, “For our research, we will now be travelling to various conferences. By the end of the year, in the next year’s WISE, we will present the results of our research and hope to be as effective as last year’s learners.”

Collective responsibility

Collective responsibility

Rakesh Bharti Mittal, vice-chairman and managing director, Bharti Foundation, one of the winners of the WISE Awards 2012, talks to Vishakha Sharma, on why India needs to focus on girl-child education

What made Satya Bharti School Programme win the WISE award? It is our mode of delivery of the programme. Since its inception in 2006, the idea of putting this initiative under the Satya Bharti Programme was to reach out to the underprivileged and the most deserving children in rural areas and villages. The focus of Bharti foundation was to reach out to the section of marginalised children and make them part of the economic growth of the country by providing them with a platform. Every child is special, it is the opportunity that makes the difference. It is our collective responsibility (both government and private sector) to support such initiatives.
How will the WISE award help your organisation to further your cause for the underprivileged children? This award is the recognition and the testimony of what the team is doing. Going to small villages is challenging as many a times there are problems of transportation, electricity, houses and even toilets. The WISE platform is ideal because here, one showcases what one is doing and also learns what others are doing around the globe.
What are the strengths of the programme? Our teachers and cluster coordinators go to the villages of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan where we have schools and where the number of girls out-ofschool is more. Out of our 38,000 children, 49% are
girls. While education is a fundamental right, we also
need to provide value-based education and that is
what we try to do by allowing our children
to spend time outside classrooms and be part of community development programmes, including social issues like child marriage, cast discrimination, etc. We also talk about hygiene and cleanliness. So by inculcating these value systems and habits in our children, we try to create change-agents in the community and society.
Do you plan to spread this initiative in other countries or other parts of India? If yes, how? We already have a presence in six states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Our first phase of setting up primary schools is over and now we are moving towards the second phase of setting up senior secondary schools. Initially, we will have 25 senior secondary schools out of which five are already working in Punjab under the PPP model with the government of Punjab. The remaining schools will start in the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
What are the challenges of girl child education in India? One of the biggest challenges is that parents are reluctant to send their daughters to school, though this scenario is slowly changing. Even those who send their daughters to school withdraw them after class V and expect them to start earning a living. However, there has been a major shift, at least in India, where
parents want their children to study and make a future and career for themselves. They no longer want their children to live their lives the way they had lived.
The second challenge is to provide them with the facility of toilets, which most government schools lack. Other challenges include parents not being able to afford uniforms and lack of mid-day meal facility.
Is education enough for the girl child or should she also be provided with skills-training? Children drop out because parents feel that they need to become earning hands. Providing vocational training in schools is extremely important to make every child employable after school. This is why, class X onwards, we have decided to provide vocational training in our senior secondary schools. We will also create suitable modules to provide training.

COLLABORATION, KEY TO CHANGE

COLLABORATION, KEY TO CHANGE

From exploring best practices in education and tracking the latest trends to addressing challenges in education, the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) 2012, offered an insight into how collaboration can inspire innovation in education. Vishakha Sharma reports

Strong collaborations are often the source of best ideas, but can they actually inspire effective and long-term innovations in education? With this in mind, the fourth edition of the World Innovation Summit for Education 2012 (WISE) brought together more than 1,000 academic, corporate, political and social leaders from over 100 countries at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha to explore the theme, ‘Collaborating for Change.’
How can the world, through newage education, address the complexities and interrelated challenges facing the world today? What are the creative solutions to access, financing and teaching? How do we improve strategies to share success and enhance institutional processes? These and several other questions were discussed and deliberated upon by participants during the three-day summit (November 13-15).
His Excellency Abdulla bin Ali Al-Thani, chairman of WISE, in his welcome address said, “WISE is an ideal platform for multi-sectoral collabora
tion in building the future of education. We have to consider how education can be re-shaped to meet the major challenges of modern life, against the backdrop of globalisation, and despite stark inequalities among and within societies.”
According to Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson, Qatar Foundation, organisers of the sum
mit, WISE, it is through education that a collective mind of communities is formed that helps in building a future, which is innovative.
The summit offered interactive discussions with speakers, experts and members from the WISE community. Attendees got an opportunity to collaborate, interact and share best practices during the several plenary sessions and debates. Also, some of the other sessions focused on innovations and projects, along with workshops to facilitate collaboration on specific issues.
> ROAD AHEAD For Jenna Brashear, a graduate student at Vanderbilt University, US, collaborating with learners is the best way to teach them how to collaborate along with acquiring other important 21st Century skills. Emphasising on collaboration, Brashear said, “Collaboration with learners makes education more responsive and effective for learners; by increasing involvement, learners show willingness to engage in active citi
zenship in the future and finally it helps in building a curriculum that incorporates real-life materials.”
Talking about the importance of private partnerships for overall growth of education, Andrew P Swiger, senior vice-president, ExxonMobil Corporation, said, “Collaboration of government, philanthropic institutes and business is
needed for education to reach out to the world. This is because the role of business brings real knowledge in the economic space in the communities we operate in.”
However, according to Irina Bokova, director-general, UNESCO, education is also becoming part of a global political agenda. She pointed out that education today is not just about hu
man rights any longer, but also an answer to questions on globalisation or for that matter economic crisis. “Education empowers people, it is about human dignity, peace and sustainable development. Education is also about having healthy families and healthy children. So, education, inevitably, brings in sustainability in different areas of development,” she added.
